Inland Diving
Inland diving sites have much to offer the recreational diver. They can provide a sheltered environment to learn new and more challenging skills and are less prone to the effects of bad weather, so are less likely to be 'blown out'.
For Ocean Diver training we tend to use Stoney Cove near Leicester. It has a suitable 6M shelf for initial training, good facilities (changing rooms, showers, food and drinks etc). There are plenty of interesting items to view and a plethora of fish, including pike. The fish are not bothered by the divers, and if you cannot see any, look behind you.
For the more advanced diver training we visit Chepstow or Vobster Quay. They provide more variety in the diving and greater depths.
One of the more exotic inland sites is the Submarine Escape Training Tank SETT at HMNB Portsmouth. This is a 100 foot (nearly 30M) deep tank of fresh water. Its day job is to allow the training of submariners of the Royal Navy and other navies in escape techniques. At weekends, it is made available to groups. Experience 30M visibility. Vertically!
Other sites are visited regularly, Blue Lagoon near Bletchley provides a site suitable for an Wednesday evening (summertime) or Sunday morning dive courtesy of a sister BSAC organisation.
We also dive at Wraysbury, which is convenient for the M25.
